Handel's Messiah

The annual Advent performance of Handel's Messiah was given to a full nave during the afternoon of Sunday 8th December. The cathedral choir was accompanied by Devon Baroque, as in previous years. The horrendous Storm Darragh had caused the first of this year's three Christmas with the Cathedral Choir concerts to be cancelled the previous evening, but fortunately things had calmed sufficently for the Messiah to go ahead the following day.

The top photograph shows Molly Noon (far left), the soprano soloist and daughter of the cathedral's Director of Music, Timothy Noon.

The lower photograph shows Madeleine Shaw (behind Tim Noon), the contralto soloist. Another good cathedral choir connection here, as she is the daughter of Martin Shaw, former Succentor at Exeter, brother of Ben who is a former chorister, is married to Eamonn Mulhall the tenor soloist, and their two daughters are choristers in the choir.

The 'family' connections continued with the bass soloist, Tim Murfin. His youngest daughter is a chorister and her older sister and brother are former choristers.
